When you have significant tooth decay, the pulp inside your tooth can become infected and it can spread down the roots of your tooth and cause painful abscesses that, if left untreated, can result in tooth loss.
Root canal treatment removes this infected tissue before it has the opportunity to spread by cleaning the cavity to ensure there are no bacteria left and then filling it with specially treated dental material to prevent further infection. The tooth is then re-built or fitted with a crown to match the rest of your teeth.
The whole process can take 3 to 4 appointments depending on the tooth, the history of the tooth, infection in the tooth and other factors.
Sometimes dentist may recommend a tooth extraction as an alternative if the infection has spread and chance of saving the tooth is very small. But at Tooth-n-Gum Dental, the dentist will do everything possible to save the affected tooth or teeth, and will discuss all the possible options with you before starting any treatment.
At Tooth-n-Gum Dental we perform the Root Canal Treatment under a local anesthetic (L.A.) to help reduce any feelings of distress or unease. A topical anesthetic gel is applied to the area and allowed time to lightly numb the area before applying the local anesthetic and this too will be given plenty of time to work (or the process repeated, if necessary).
